The parkway is 469 miles long with a maximum speed limit of only 45mph
....Put it this way...if you are in a hurry then the parkway is not for you.
The parkway is called America's Favorite Scenic Drive that follows closely the highest ridges between the Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains National Parks, attaining altitudes of more than 6,000 feet. It is designed especially for leisurely enjoyment of scenic and cultural wonders. All without stop signs, traffic lights or any commercial vehicles.
The southern end where we started was the most winding and challenging to drive until the last 150 miles that we drove in dense (pee soup) fog and off and on rain.
We then traveled 85 miles of the 105 mile Skyline Drive which runs through the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia but exited early because of hard rain and more dense fog. The Skyline Drive is similar to the parkway but the speed limit is only 35mph and they charge a small fee.
We stayed 3 nights at National Park Campgrounds right on the parkway and skyline and one at a private campground called Raccoon Holler...
We had 2 days of sun and 1 1/2 days of rain with fog but we enjoyed our time on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.
We would also suggest it to anyone who is traveling north or south and is not in any particular hurry to travel at least a part of one or the other.
