HOWDY YOU'AL
Yes we have ben in Texas before, but this time we had planned places to stop. Our first couple weeks were quite busy as we traveled to TCU to meet up with our Grand Nephew Greg Payne "in his first year" and go to the Family Motor Coach Ass. 6 state rally before turning west to San Antonio.
We must say that Texas Christian University is one the nicest schools that we have visited with a beautiful campus and impressive Athletic Facilities second to none...we were very impressed and see why the choice was made to attend TCU.
They start them young in Texas...
A little competition of who can hold the cheerleader with one hand the longest
....and yes TCU won that also!
We were fortunate to be there for Homecoming and attend the football game against Texas...even though it wasn't much of a game with TCU the much smaller school with just 8,500 enrollment beating up on the powerhouse Texas with over 51,000 enrollment with a lopsided score of 50 to 7...
We also enjoyed going out to dinner in the Stock Yards area....Well we always enjoy going out to dinner...but some places are just "more enjoyable" and to share with our nephew was great.
You pass by the offering of sausage, brisket, steaks, pork ribs and beef ribs and just tell them what you want...and how much...and they will cut some off as you pay for meal by weight. Tony got a little carried away with ordering but had enough for two more meals.
Our campsite while visiting TCU was only 6 miles from campus on Benbrook Lake... a US Army Corps of Engineers / Holiday Park Campground which was not only convenient but a nice inexpensive place to stay.
We then down to the Family Motor Coach Six State Rally in Conroe Texas called the EYES OF TEXAS. Over 350 Motor Homes were in attendance from not only the surrounding states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and of course Texas but also from all around the country...even one from Toledo OH.
The rally included seminars on RV related subjects like coach safety, travel, and keeping your coach running and looking good. There was also a nice variety of coaches on display ... for sale and entertainment nightly.
Sandy demonstrating...(one way) to escape an RV in case of a fire!
We got there a couple days early to participate in the Golf Scrambles and were fortunate to be paired with a couple nice guys...and more important good golfers so we ended up the winning team. Thanks Don and Ross it was fun!
One of the couples we met from Granbury Texas, Nancy and Don leaving the rally and heading north.
A stop in San Antonio would not be complete without a day on the River Walk
...of course it was 98 degrees that day. A very interesting place to take a stroll with lots of bars, restaurants and shops...with air conditioning...thank goodness!
Our favorite place to stay while visiting San Antonio...actually the only place we've stayed...but our second time because we can take the bus for a short ride to the River Walk and other attractions. It's also nice to have a great restaurant across the street...The local Fire Fighters also think so!
As we traveled west on 90 we started to think about provisions since we were getting into more remote areas. So in Del Rio we stopped at the last Wal-Mart for awhile (with some interesting offerings) and another "pay by the weight" Bar-B-Q...and YES a pattern is developing...and YES Tony ordered to much.
Our next destination stop in Texas will be Big Bend National Park after a couple days of travel and over nights...because what they say is true (Everything's Bigger in Texas) ....which is also true about the miles between things.
