ROUGH CANYON

We found this wonderful spot near Del Rio...in W. TX at the Amistad National Recreation Area. We stayed at a out of the way area called Rough Canyon overlooking a portion of a huge reservoir which is part of an international recreational area on the United States & Mexico border. The reservoir was created by a 6-mile-long Dam on the Rio Grande. It extends 74 miles up the Rio Grande...14 miles up the Pecos River and 25 miles up the Devils River were we found our little spot. This was the view out our side door...

This is a Fisherman's paradise with 8 to 10 pound bass and 40 pound catfish...and listed as one of the top bass fishing spots in the nation with many big tournaments and featured on ESPN .

The fishing was the big draw and the busy season starts in March so we enjoyed beautiful quiet scenery and warm weather. This is our favorite way to camp and we are always looking for a place like this....the best 2 days of camping...and we will go back.

We were the only ones camping at this particular location run by the National Parks Service. This was also our first "over night" in a national park system on this trip and we purchased a Senior Pass....$5..and good for life....The pass can be used for free or discounted activities throughout the system...our fee for 2 nights...a total of $4...

We are in Zapata tonight and Mission tomorrow on our way to the Golf Of Mexico...were we will spend a few days in a couple of parks on our way along the coast...one of which is Malaquite Beach...which is part of the Padre Island National Seashore.
