We are in the heart of the Lone Star State...the Hill Country. Home to green trees & rolling hills that dominate the region...which is quite different from the rest of Texas. Our first of three weeks in Hill Country we stayed at Potters Creek Park a Corps of Engineers facility on Canyon Lake, a 8,230 acre lake with 80 miles of shoreline created by a massive earthen dam finished in 1964 for flood control & water conservation at a cost of 20.2 million.

The long drought has pretty much dried up the Guadalupe River used for tubing...which is the areas biggest draw in summer time, but Canyon Lake...although being down some 12 feet still had some boating activity on it.

The small historic town of Gruene was a great town to hang out....so much we went twice. Filled with specialty shops, river outfitters, restaurants, wine tasting, antiques, entertainment and Texas' oldest dance hall: The Grunene Hall built in 1878 where George Strait, Lyle Lovett and Hal Ketchum got started. "You feel the history just walking into this place"

.......AND THE FOOD WASN'T BAD ETHER !

AND when ever we talk about food in Texas this place will come to mind. When we checked into Potters Creek we were told a burn ban was being unforced...so no outside fires, not even gas grills were allowed. We remembered this little restaurant we past on the road coming into the the park & little was under estimating the size. The Mexican family who owned and operated this establishment were amazing. There where some outside seating but the inside seating was only 14, and the open to the dining area kitchen was just slightly larger than our RV galley, but they delivered a very good meal for a great price. We of course visited them a few more times and soon the cooks were coming out from that tiny kitchen to say hello & thanking us for coming in...a great place run by a nice family.

Many of the buildings, at least in this area use galvanized corrugated in there construction for roofs and siding, giving a very rustic look.

This was interesting to see, a cowboy tied up his horse at the marina bar on Canyon Lake.
