Tony heard about this place from someone he golfs with....and Ron, we see why you bring your family hear. Dotted with homes and vacation rentals along a beach that seems to go on forever we wish we could stay a few days but we need to keep moving...because we are on a schedule.
After one night at a private campground called Laniers with a nice setting on the intercostal...actually nicer than we expected, we moved on to South Carolina where we went through Myrtle Beach, which we have always bypassed on earlier trips. As Topsail was a nice relaxing area to visit...Myrtle Beach was on steroids...with more of...MORE. A popular tourist destination for many but far to busy for us to spend much time there.
In our travels last year in the south west we heard of a state park that was a "must stay" from the RVers we were talking to. This place, Huntington Beach, first drew our attention because our nephew Brian lives there in California and we said...Oh we know of that place...but this couple was talking about the east coast in South Carolina, So...we had to visit...and stayed three nights.
Quite a contrast to California with much more lush foliage and wildlife of all kinds...even alligators!
Then we stopped at a place most everyone has heard of and we have been to a couple times before...the beautiful historical town of Savannah. If you have never been there it's well worth a couple days. We learned a couple years ago we could stay over night at the visitors center for the great cost of only $7:00 and you are right in the middle of everything including all the tours start there.
Of course we have to eat...this was an appetizer!!!
One of the nations premier art schools The Savannah College of Art and Design, S C A D is also adjacent to the welcome center...well part of it. One of interesting things you will see as you explore around this town is all the historic buildings that the collage has renovated and now leases out as a great revenue source.
After just one night in Savannah, but time enough to meet one of the college directors and learn a little more about the school we headed south with Georgia on our minds.
Two years ago while camping at Crooked River State Park in Southern Georgia we were surprised to meet up with someone Tony knew from the church camp they both worked at fifty (50) years ago...when she said you're Tony Myers aren't you...After Tony picked himself up and realized who it was we had a nice visit with an invitation to stop for a longer time the next time through.
So we stopped in St. Marys, the last town in Georgia to visit and of course revisit the past with Gail (Emric) Latham and husband Steve. Our say included a great trip to, and bike ride excursion around part of Jekyll Island. The smallest of Georgia's Barrier Islands but we think the most beautiful with paved bike paths winding through the 5,700..as the sign says "BIKED IT and LIKED IT"
We have to say Gail and Steve live in a very nice setting with all the southern native foliage, moss hanging off the trees and a active variety of animals and birds that live along the stream that winds around an island in back of there house...rather serene...Oh and Steve is a great cook...so who knows..in 2 years?
Our next stop just into Florida in Orange Park was for a quick visit with two more people from Tony's past and that same church camp. Our visit was so quick we didn't even get a picture of Pastor David Winter and his wife Irine. We also revisited things that went on at camp when he was the Youth Pastor at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Toledo. Tony's first job and the Winter's helped make it memorable.
