OSCAR SCHERER STATE PARK

When you pull into Oscar Scherer State Park from Tamiami Trail and the hustle and bustle of the towns of Osprey and Sarasota you find yourself in a completely different world. The park preserves more than two square-miles of natural land in a rapidly developing region.

Bald Eagles nest here in winter and are commonly seen. However Oscar Scherer is perhaps best known as a place to see the Florida Scrub-Jay because now it's the only protected area for population in southwest Florida.

Our camp site was right along the South Creek water way that makes it's way out to Casey Key and the Gulf of Mexico.

We meet a very nice and interesting gentleman, Steve Hunziker, a volunteer at the park for more than ten years. We learned a lot about the park and the surrounding area from Steve and the fact we spent two weeks here.

Bike trails are always a plus and the area has no shortage of them. Two of the best known are the Legacy Trail "which ran right next to the state park" and the Venetian Waterway Park Trail which are both 10 miles long and meet in Venice.

We embrace the modern amenities and conveniences like shopping centers, restaurants and attractions but we really love the serenity of a quite and peaceful state park and Oscar Scherer gives you both.
