The three days we spent at Malaquite Beach on the Padre Island National Seashore was a great find. We definitely will stay here again on our next trip through Texas...but at $4 a night it will
be a longer stay.
Padre Island is one of a chain of islands that stretches along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the U.S. from Maine to Texas. These islands are called barrier islands because they protect the mainland from the direct onslaught of storm tides.
The plants and animals here are well adapted to the ever-changing nature. The grasses are sea oats, a wild shore plant that moves into areas of loose, blowing sand and takes root where few other plants can grow.
Among the wildlife on the island are many birds that live here year-round or visit seasonally, our favorite, the flocks of white pelicans that patrol the beach with military precision. Also you will find coyotes, black-tailed jackrabbits, lizards, diamondback rattlesnakes (one recently spotted) and along the beach crabs, shrimp. Five sea turtle species live in the Gulf, and three of the species nest here each year.
