SAN DIEGO (PART 2)

We then went to north San Diego, the Mission Bay area for a few days, staying at two different RV parks, one of witch was Campland on the bay...a mega park with over a thousand camp sites.. ...lucky for us at this time of year they were only about 35% full. We usually don't stay at a place like this...to crowded...& to noisey, but this was the only RV park that the Gray Line Tour picked up at and we wanted to take a guided tour of the city. By taking a tour we learn a lot about the history of the area and about things we might want to spend more time at. Our tour was split into two parts, a city tour and a bay tour. We learned that over 60,000 boats are docked at a cost of up to $1,000 a month and 2,000 sailboats are moored (off shore) at a cost of $60 a month, of witch there is a two year weighting period for. Needless to say boats are a big business in the bay area.

The pictures out the bus window weren't as good as the ones we took off the boat like this one of the under water cavern just off the exclusive shore of La Jolla wear the homes average well over 3 million.

We also did some exploring by car one day when nephew Brain came down from Huntington Beach. We went to the Gas Light District, a 16 block historical neighborhood in the downtown area. The main period of development began in 1867 and 94 buildings are historic places. The Gas Light now boasts over 200 restaurants, bars, nightclubs, lounges and countless boutiques, art galleries and shops.

As you can see the area was a place to see...and a place to be seen!

The Hotel Del Coronado, built in 1888 on Coronado Island was one of the most interesting places we visited. Not only because of it's unique beauty both inside and out but the amazing way it was built (in just eleven months). In order to facilitate construction a planing mill, brick kiln, foundry and other support services were built on site. Also a hand full of engineers had to train a couple thousand unskilled workers, mostly Chinese, to work around the clock. But first, because Coronado was an island water and electric lines had to be run under water through the San Diego Bay...quite an undertaking of that time.

This is were we had Tony 65th birthday lunch....2 burgers, 2 beers & 1chilly for $65.00 ...how ironic!!! But what a view...and we even had a friendly guest.

The hotel was definitely a upscale place...but it seemed like they had a lot of business by the number of family's staying there or at least eating there "like us". There was also a lot of activity on the beach like someone practicing for an upcoming sand sculpture contest

Now we head east & back to Arizona for a few days and then back to Ohio.
